Vintage Design
This exceptional Shanxi sideboard, from circa 1920, is an ideal statement piece for any home. It was produced in Shanxi province in China, the crafting of this decorative and vibrantly appointed cabinet is emblematic of the area’s aesthetic. Originally, just the central doors were present, while the panels on either side were fixed—yet practicality led to the later conversion of these external panels to doors.
Each door, apron, and the three panels below boast exquisite floral paintings in greens and golds, now faded to create a more subtle contrast against the deep red lacquer. The spandrels at either side present open carvings and taper down to curved feet, with small door handles and internal shelves for extra storage added. The sideboard is rejuvenated with a shiny finish, adding even more depth and richness to the hues. Old-world charm and character radiates from the piece, making it an enthralling addition to any decor.
