This fabulous, hand painted, Eastern European trunk dates from the turn of the Century. It would make a charming addition to any room as both storage and decor!

A Swedish rustic yet sophisticated pine blanket chest is painted with Baroque polychrome cartouches and scrolling ornament in Prussian Blue, orange and cream, dated 1783. It would have been made to celebrate a wedding and filled with household linens as a wedding gift., The interior has a small lidded compartment built in at the left side. Nice original rustic hinges and hardware. Good overall antique condition, with small losses and wear to the paint, attractive patina showing age, missing lock mechanism inside the case. Clean interior.

A large and impressive Victorian era dome top steamer trunk, circa 1870s. Features a tooled leather frame wrapped in black metal with oak banding and gold medallions. Opens to two litho portraits on the lid and a compartment for additional storage.

Steamer trunks, also known as cabin trunks or traveling trunks, were originally used as luggage for extended trips by steamship, train, or stagecoach or for taking to boarding school. Many were quite elaborate inside and out. Steamer trunks have a distinguishing curved or barrel top and can weigh as much as 100 pounds. Today, they are used as furniture or storage.

Trunks have been used around the world for thousands of years. The small, flat-topped trunk, we see in use today were popular during the Victorian era and were used primarily for storage. They were usually made of pine and covered in decorative material or leather.
